Tom Jones, DNR large lake specialist, said the number of zebra mussels in Mille Lacs is not as high as they thought it would be. The prediction for Mille Lacs this year had been in the thousands per square foot of water. Zebra mussels can reach a density upwards of 10,000 per square foot.

Meet from 9:30-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, rain or shine, for a half hour introduction to the cultural and geological history of this upper-most stretch of the Rum River, at the Mille Lacs Kathio State Park Interpretive Center.

Master gardener Heather Tideman facilitated the rain garden workshop at Katrina Chang’s in Wahkon on Tuesday, Aug. 24. About a dozen people attended. The workshop started with a classroom session.

Group meets to discuss the state of the lake. The Mille Lacs Lake Watershed Management Group met in Wahkon on Aug. 16. Kitty Chang Murphy of Deals Gone Wild played host to the meeting. Murphy is a recipient of the Board of Water and Soil Resources Clean Water Fund Grant facilitated through the MLLWMG. She is using the funds to put in a rain water garden in the lot adjoining her thrift store.

Minnesota now has more ash trees than any other state, a claim held by Michigan until emerald ash borer (EAB) arrived there and destroyed millions of ash beginning in 2002. Ash is an important part of Minnesota’s forest environment and communities. It is also very common in wind and snow fencing around the state.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Monday that a general sign-up for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) will begin on August 2, 2010 and continue through August 27, 2010. During the sign-up period, farmers and ranchers may offer eligible land for CRP's competitive general sign-up at their county Farm Service Agency (FSA) office.
