Increased DWI enforcement patrols started last week across Minnesota and the nation and will continue through Labor Day. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety reports the last two weekends in August and Labor Day weekend have been in the top 11 deadliest weekends for alcohol-related crashes over the last three years — resulting in 29 deaths.

The contractor is on schedule to have Hwy. 65 open from the city of Mora to Kanabec County Road 3 before Labor Day weekend. At that point, traffic will shift to the stage II detour, which will eliminate detour traffic through the school zone.

Patrick James Kreger, 30, of Milaca was arrested on Aug. 12 after a Princeton police officer received a driving complaint regarding a possible road rage incident. According to the complaint, the officer spoke with Kreger at the scene. Kreger said an individual in a nearby car pointed a gun at him. The officer approached the driver of a 1999 VW Passat and told him to get out of the vehicle with his arms in the air.

Motorcyclist fatalities have reached the 20-death mark for the year, according to the preliminary crash reports from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS). This figure is 35 percent lower than the 31 deaths at this time last year. In 2009, there were 53 rider deaths, a significant drop from 72 deaths in 2008.

Crews have been driving piles and pouring concrete at the Dunn Bridge and Hwy. 95 bridge sites in Princeton. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid September for the new roundabout at the intersection of Hwy. 95 and Rum River Drive.
