Ronald Duane Lensegrav, 72, of Buffalo, was arrested on July 16 after he crashed his car on a curve on Stevens Road between Wahkon and Onamia. A Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the scene of the accident just after 6 p.m. and found Lensegrav leaning against a severely damaged vehicle. The officer asked Lensegrav if he had been driving the vehicle, and Lensegrav admitted he had.
According to the complaint filed in the Mille Lacs County District Court, the officer detected the odor of alcohol emitting from Lensegrav. Lensegrav told the officer that his brother was on the other side of the car, and he needed help. The officer circled the car and found John David Lensegrav, 70, on the ground beside the vehicle. He was bruised and bloody, and he told the officer that he couldn’t move. “My brother is a bastard,” John said. “He tried to kill me.” More police officers arrived, and Ronald was given a preliminary breath test which registered a .157 alcohol content. Ronald admitted he had been drinking, but said he didn’t think he would be over the legal limit. Both brothers were transported to Mille Lacs Health System where Ronald consented to a blood test, which was sent on for further testing. While Ronald was being tested, John was flown to North Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a little before midnight. Ronald is charged with criminal vehicular homicide, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine. He is facing a second charge of fourth degree driving while impaired.
