“Upward Bound is easily the best thing I have ever done in my life,” said Naomi Weyaus. “I recommend it to anyone.” Weyaus is involved in the Upward Bound program through Central Lakes College. This organization helps students succeed both in school and at life in general.
In the Upward Bound summer program, students are placed at workplaces according to their skills and abilities. Weyaus was placed at the St. Cloud Times newspaper for a summer internship. Weyaus started working in early June and completed her internship July 12. “I received a work experience I would not have gotten otherwise,” said Weyaus. She has written several stories or briefs, including articles on the Lemonade Concert and Art Fair and the latest Twilight saga. “I like creative writing the best,” said Weyaus. “In journalism, you have to switch everything around and give all the surprises away.” Naomi is a graduate of Onamia this past school year and is going on to bigger, better things. This fall, she will attend the prestigious Marquette University, pursuing a writing or English major, perhaps in journalism.
In her time at Onamia, Weyaus took part in anything having to do with her trumpet. She played in the marching band, pep band, concert band, and jazz band. She has also been accepted into the Marquette college band. The Onamia band teacher asked Weyaus if she had plans to take part in Marquette’s pep band and perform at the big basketball games. “I don’t know,” said Weyaus. “I was embarrassed because I didn’t know that Marquette had a basketball team.” Naomi’s parents are Tracy and Randy Weyaus, and she has five siblings. “I think my family is really proud of me,” said Weyaus. “They get really excited when they see something I wrote, or (something) written about me.”
