Well, the hard water season is wrapping up, for the most part.
They are still catching bluegills and pumpkinseeds out on Isle and Wahkon bays, but that’s hit and miss according to the patient anglers I’ve spoke to in the last week. The crappies are swimming past the cameras, but they haven’t yet made their big push. Could happen any minute now. John Odle of Rocky Reef Resort had some good news from the west side of Mille Lacs Lake. The perch are biting. Not the little dinky ones, either. Garrison conservation officer Greg Verkuilen confirmed Odle’s story in his weekly report. Odle recommended fishing either the bug humps or the second reef in about 31 feet of water. “Once we lose the snow this bite is really going to snap,” he said. Odle suggested waxies or Euro larva on a number 2 or 3 Swedish Pimple. I’m starting Wally’s 20-30-40-50 Club. If you’ve caught a 21-inch bass, a 30-inch walleye, a 40-inch northern and a 50-inch muskie, I want to tell your story. I have the first member lined up for next week’s edition of the Messenger, so check it out. Contact rpassons@millelacsmessenger.com, or call (320) 676-3123.
