The bite was pretty slow at the 27th Annual Perch Extravaganza held at Nitti’s Hunters Point Resort on Feb. 27.
The fish may have been a little on the lazy side, but it was a perfect day for a fishing tournament, and thousands of anglers showed up to try their luck. “We’ve had a very good turnout,” said event organizer  Steve Johnson of Johnson’s Portside Bait and Liquor. “I think it’s a record.”
All the kids were given fishing gift bags, and the girls from Portside kept the crowd’s attention launching t-shirts from a canon.
Steve Knops of Bloomington won the $500 big-fish prize with a 1.4-pound perch.
The grand prize drawing, a new Ice Castle wheel house, went to Rolland Wivoda of Zimmerman.
