Over 70 volunteers made Christmas a little brighter for local kids at the Wahkon, Izatys, South Harbor Lions' "kids shopping 2008" event.

Over 70 volunteers made Christmas a little brighter for local kids at the Wahkon, Izatys, South Harbor Lions' "kids shopping 2008" event.

Nineteen WISH Lions Club members plus about 50 others Christmas shopped for 95 children from the Mille Lacs area.

Fifty-seven of the kids took busses to the Target store in Rogers and were able to choose their own Christmas presents, with help from a volunteer shopper. Thirty-eight others could not attend but also received presents.

Fourteen volunteers checked shoppers in and out and helped supervise. Each shopper was given a child's name and a shopping list. They went to the busses and found their shopping partners, helped them choose their presents, then shared a lunch in the food court.

Each child was given a certain amount to spend on clothing and other necessities, plus $15 to spend on a toy or CD.

Judith Malmgren, who helped organize the event, thanked the honor students from Isle and Onamia, as well as other volunteers.

"As always this is a major undertaking for a small club," Malmgren said. "Special thanks to Julie Wilsey and Barb Erickson who spent many hours preparing shopping sheets, making bag tags, picking up information at the schools and taking care of all the organizational details that contributed to the success of this event."

The group spent $12,142 raised from the WISH Lions summer golf tournament. The tournament raised a total of over $15,000, all of which will be given away, according to Lion Tom Malmgren.
